Announcing "Drawn From The Desert" benefiting local artist Kim Mayhew of Ant Farm Studio (www.got-ants.com), home of the Ant Farm Gang and "Loco Folko" art. Kim recently underwent uterine cancer surgery and treatment with minimal insurance and our community is rallying to help Kim. Your donations will help with existing and future medical expenses.

The Sun Runner Magazine is hosting our Desert Writers Celebration on Saturday, September 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Tamma's Magic Mercantile in Old Town Yucca Valley in conjunction with publication of The Sun Runner's fifth annual Desert Writers Issue. Desert writers and poets, including contributors to the Desert Writers Issue, will be reading from their work, and some will be hosting signings of their books during the event. There will be refreshments and the opportunity for writers and poets, who often work in relative isolation, to meet each other and share their work. In addition, The Sun Runner's Desert Writers Celebration is part of 100 Thousand Poets for Change, a global event taking place on September 24 with 650 individual events in 450 cities in 95 countries around the globe, in a demonstration and celebration of poetry to promote serious social, environmental, and political change. Poems from poets around the world will be read during the Desert Writers Celebration, in addition to works by desert poets, as part of 100 Thousand Poets for Change.

The Sun Runner is also hosting Drawn from the Desert, an arts benefit for local artist Kim Mayhew, during the hours of the Desert Writers Celebration. Donated works of art from around the country have been arriving as part of the benefit to help raise funds for Mayhew's cancer treatment. The works will be on sale Saturday evening. Drawn from the Desert is a collaborative benefit by The Sun Runner Magazine, Glitter Bitches Handmade, and Tamma's Magic Mercantile. The public is invited to attend the Desert Writers Celebration and Drawn from the Desert arts benefit, to listen to writers and poets read their work, meet them and discuss their work, obtain signed copies of their books, and browse works of art for sale to raise funds in support of a local artist.

The Sun Runner Magazine is the magazine of the real California desert. The publication is based in Joshua Tree, and will celebrate its 17th birthday in January, 2012. The magazine now reaches from Borrego Springs to Death Valley and Lone Pine, and is available at more than 500 locations across the California desert and southern California.
